  • Though the exact value of China’s spending on its space programs remains shrouded in secrecy, many analysts peg its civilian space budget at around $3 billion annually in recent years, a fraction of the $19.3 billion the United States allocated to NASA in 2016. Prior to 2003 China — whose space program dates back to the 1950s — had never put an astronaut (a “taikonaut” in Chinese nomenclature) into orbit. In the years since, it has moved rapidly toward parity with space powers like Russia and th

  • EGX Rezzed is rapidly approaching – to be precise, it’s on in London from Thursday to Saturday this week – and with it comes a personal favourite pair of events: the Rezzed Sessions and Developer Sessions. For the uninitiated, the smaller-scale Rezzed Sessions are where our friends and colleagues in the Gamer Network Events team host deep dives into game development and the video game industry in the form of talks, interviews and discussions. The Developer Sessions, meanwhile, are the place to b

The survey is completely anonymous and it helps us out in a bunch of ways. As well as giving us direct feedback about our work, it helps us build an accurate picture of our audience, so we know who we’re talking to. • Which makes it a disappointment that Andromeda’s inclusion of a trans character is fumbled. What’s frustrating here is that any trans person could have given this the most cursory glance and immediately told the writers why this is wrong. In those instances where they’re intended to be treated respectfully, it’s usually without the consultation of any trans person and thus still perpetuates false ideas. Mindy is not defined solely by her trans identity, which is instead woven into her character

  • It’s far more ambitious than previous Mass Effect games, with more lines of dialogue than Mass Effect 2 and 3 combined (for comparison, Mass Effect 3 has 40,000 lines). And Andromeda features 1,200 speaking characters, which is double the number in Mass Effect 3. So that’s a lot of facial animation. All in all, it represents an extraordinary amount of work, more than BioWare has ever tackled before in a Mass Effect. Much facial animation completely omits the little twitches of eye, expression an

  • Punch Club comes out on consoles this Friday. The boxing management sim was a hit on Steam when it launched on Valve’s platform last year, selling over 300,000 copies. Now, it’s coming out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 28th March 2017. Punch Club was developed by Lazy Bear Games and published by tinyBuild Games (you might remember tinyBuild for its public row with controversial key reseller G2A). tinyBuild said its studio in The Netherlands has been co-developing ports such as this one (it’s

  • Square Enix has lifted the 14-day time restriction on the Final Fantasy 14 free trial. This means free trial players can level up all the MMO’s classes to level 35 without the clock ticking. The time restriction has been removed from all free trial accounts. In a cool move, Square Enix has brought back to life expired accounts so players can continue where they left off. So, if you tried the free trial before but time ran out, you can come back and get going again with the same character.

Paprium, due out 16th September 2017, is a new Mega Drive game four years in the making, and it channels 16-bit beat ’em up classics such as Streets of Rage 2 and Final Fight 2. Playing your 13th game on the system will uncover a new “all software” option at the end of your home screen’s horizontal games menu. From here, you can then see your full games library on one screen without the need for scrolling sideways. Eurogamer’s Martin unlocked the menu option last night, the fanboy. As revealed by NME, here’s the official synopsis of the film:”Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. • Civilization 6 is a game I very much enjoyed, but most players agree the warmonger penalty was too harsh. Civ 6 would end up hitting players with punishing warmonger penalties seemingly whether they were playing aggressively or not. The update adjusts warmonger penalties for Diplomatic status. So, when applying a warmonger diplomatic penalty for capturing a city, that penalty is reduced if the city is smaller than the average city in the game. Therefore the warmonger penalty is reduced by 25 per

Fans of the fondly-remembered 90s adventure classic, which starred the late, great Robin Williams as a character trapped in a magical board game, have reacted in surprise to the news. 2017’s Jumanji reboot/sequel/reimagining has now been given an official title: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. • The Peacekeeper’s popularity has extended to the fledgling For Honor tournament scene, which has been criticised for the over-abundance of the Peacekeeper. MLG online tournaments have already seen the Peacekeeper rise to the top of the tier tree, and so they’re a bit boring to watch. • One of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s most entertaining toys is a glider that lets players soar over the expansive land of Hyrule. Typically gravity and stamina prevent Link from hovering too far, but diligent YouTuber Yukinosan found a way to stay adrift for a staggering 7615.8 meters. As seen in the video above, Yukinosan uses bomb arrows to create updrafts of wind while also relying on stamina elixirs to maintain a grip over the glider.
